Most people dread Mondays.  For me it’s Wednesdays.  I babysit two other preschoolers all day Wednesdays so I have four under four.  And while they all are generally good kids, being cooped up inside makes for long days.  This morning we have had breakfast, two episodes of Diego, coloring, play-do, a running/screaming/jumping on the bed session, snacks, and a campout and it’s only 10:30.  I’m hoping everyone cooperates enough to make cookies later because I’m running out of things to do with them.  We got our first snow last night (only a dusting) so I’m hoping it will stay until after lunch and we can go run outside to get rid of some of this hyperness.  Maybe have the first snowball fight of the year or build a mini-snowman!

Anyway, that’s my vent for today… Just needed to tell someone and since hubby’s out of town this week this blog is my outlet!

Any ideas to keep preschoolers occupied this winter (without too much mess) would be greatly appreciated!  I’m too tired right now to come up with any ideas…

Menu Plan Monday- AK

26 10 2009

menubuttonThis week is going to be low key since hubby’s out of town… So far I’m using the extra time for some organizing- kitchen, toys, basement and paperwork.  I got a few cookbooks out of the library, one of them being the Once-a-Month Cooking (oamc) manual so a lot of this week’s recipes are from that book.

Here is my plan for the week:

Monday- peanut butter and jelly sandwiches (see, I said low key!)
Tuesday- beans and rice
Wednesday- salmon patties (already in the freezer)
Thursday- Chili Verde using turkey (oamc)
Friday- Chicken Nuggets (oamc)
Saturday- Spicy Garlic Chicken Pizza (oamc)
Sunday- Mexican Stroganoff (oamc)

The OAMC recipes I plan on making extra and sticking some in the freezer for future use.  The holidays are coming up so I plan to use the first couple weeks of Nov for stocking the freezer with meals.  Although the freezer is already full with partial meals so I won’t have to do too much.  For more meal planning ideas hop on over to I’m an Org Junkie.  I promise you will find enough ideas there to plan meals for the next year!!!

Have a great week!

Ready for Church

25 10 2009

Out of the blue this morning my son told me he wanted to wear a tie to church.  We are not normally a tie wearing family (only on special occasions) so I had to take a picture.  He’s growing up so fast!

boys ready for church

I think I’m going to put ties on both of them this week because that seemed to be a precursor for good behavior today!

Castle engineer in training

23 10 2009

It’s interesting to me to watch my children go from one phase to another.  From infant to baby, from baby to toddler, and now toddler to preschooler.  It seems just in the past few weeks my oldest has suddenly jumped up a level.  He’s now pretending to be superheros, dragon slayer, space explorer, etc.  And instead of just piling one block on top another he is building castles.  Sniff, my little baby is now a boy (and his brother’s not far behind).

It won’t be long until lego cities are being built here. (Mom- do you still have that huge box of legos?!)

Menu Plan Monday- AK

5 10 2009

This is going to be a short post as I have a sick toddler on my lap. This poor baby- he keeps crying and saying “hot” (because of a fever). His older brother and dad had something similar over the weekend so I’m hoping this illness will be short lived (and that I won’t get it).

Hop over to I’m an Org Junkie for different meal plan ideas… My plan for this week:

Monday: Turkey rice soup
Tuesday: Chicken curry (Thank you Nancy! I still need the recipe), rice, leftover turkey
Wednesday: Ravioli, broccoli
Thursday: Broccoli salmon casserole
Friday: Leftovers or pizza
Saturday: Pizza or eat out for a friend’s birthday
Sunday: Meatloaf, mashed potatoes, green beans

Hope everyone else is healthy this week and enjoying fall activities!

A crafter’s organizing dream

4 10 2009

Today I found a contest that made me gasp for delight!  I logged on to get ideas for this weeks meal plan over at I’m an Org Junkie and followed her links to the giveaway going on at My Organized Chaos where you can enter for a chance to win your very own Workbox!

I can not even begin to tell you how many times I have pined over this beautiful piece of furniture.  Storage, organization and workspace that can be closed up and protected from the kids!

I bet this is how my husband feels when he reads the Cabella’s catalog- LOL!

Getting a good photo

3 10 2009

Kudos to all the photographers who specialize in kids. They must have infinite patience! Here is our attempt at getting a good picture of our boys together at the fair…

Not bad, but let's try both looking at the camera...

Look how much I love my brother!

Maybe glasses will help?

I can't see!

O brother, where art thou?

I can't take this anymore.

Moving into the fake smiles...

Are we done yet?

Guess the first one was the best one after all!

Tony Lama Boots Giveaway; Hurray for Boots!

2 10 2009

I know I’ve already been pining over shoes today, but here’s some that will fit us! They are Tony Lama‘s very stylish and comfortable boots. Yes, they come with orthotic inserts for mom’s tired feet! Are your feet longing for a pair like mine are? Well, you could win a gift certificate to use toward any pair of Tony Lama boots from their Stars collection over at Travelling with Baby here. Good luck!

Side note to Jen: Just got the peanut to fall asleep and Bean’s involved in an art project, so I’ll talk about shoes rather than what we’re up to, which is not anything exciting.

Family Update

2 10 2009

I have been chided by my husband that my posting has been all but nil in the last few weeks so I am writing a quick update for those who have also noticed my lack of posts.

We are currently enjoying a lovely fall here in Alaska. Termination dust showed up on the mountains about two weeks ago and we’ve been seeing frost every morning, but the past few days have been so beautiful (the sky was a blue I’ve never seen it before) that I don’t really mind. It’s hard to believe another summer has come and gone.

My garden did not produce this year. Except for lettuce- LOL! A few carrots, a few handfuls of snow peas, about 10 raspberries and maybe a meal’s worth of broccoli. That’s about it. Oh, I forgot, we did get rhubarb and about 3 cups of cranberries. Those are the things I didn’t plant! I’ve started cleaning up the garden beds and am starting to dream about next year’s garden already.

Now that winter is here hubby won’t be hunting as much so maybe I’ll be able to get out and do some things for myself. I am currently working on a few sewing projects which are providing a great learning experience. I have discovered the wonderful things that presser feet can accomplish. The only problem is that all the fancy feet I have for my machine are high shank and I need low shank. I have one local store that may have what I need (of course it has to be on the other side of town). Otherwise I’ll have to wait to order them online.

Totally off topic- Thank you Colleen for the package you sent! The coffee is great! Especially on a cold dark morning!

Now that I’ve started typing there are tons of things I could update you all on, but Caillou is almost over so I have to wrap this up.

One last thing I want to say is that I’ve finally joined the technological bandwagon and signed up for facebook. I’m kind of sorry I did because I can see this as a big time waster. I already don’t have time to keep up with the activities I have, let alone renew friendships of people I haven’t seen or heard from in over 10 years. I received a newsletter in my inbox this morning that pretty much sums up how I feel about it. {I can’t find a link so I’ll have to paraphrase- basically it talks about how the quantity of communication has increased while the quality has decreased.} It will be nice to hear what everyone is up to, but at the same time, why on earth would anybody post that they have three loads of laundry to do this evening before they sit down to watch the new episode of {insert your favorite show here}? Come on people… who doesn’t have some chore that isn’t done?

And that is pretty much why I haven’t posted much lately. Colleen finds great giveaways and cute craft projects to share. I have been doing laundry and picking up toys and keeping my toddlers from killing themselves (they love jumping off things and running with pointy objects).

I promise when this particular toddler phase is over I will have a lot more to share. Until then enjoy my sister’s brilliant ideas!  I have some laundry I need to get done…
